The Most Successful Celebrity Wedding Dresses

We all love celebrity wedding spectacles. Whether we’re invested in the love story or are captivated by its sheer luxury and scale, we can’t help ogling over the price tags and fashion. But given the scale of these celebrity nuptials, we wanted to know which price tags have actually been worth it and have stood the test of time? We’ve analysed the most expensive celebrity weddings of all time to determine the most successful celebrity wedding dresses based on search interest, length of marriage and dress designers.

Winning Wedding Dress Designers

To determine the most successful dresses of all time, we’ve combined the number of years the celebrity couple has been/were married for along with overall search interest. Some of the top designers were not too shocking, but some omissions were. Find out who’s made the biggest splash below.

1. Alexander McQueen

Based on search interest and length of marriage, Alexander McQueen tops the list of wedding dress designers for the most lavish celebrity weddings. It’s not too shocking though when the fashion house’s most successful dresses have been worn by the British royal family in some of the biggest moments on television. Both Kate Middleton and Princess Diana both donned wedding gowns by designers working for the fashion house. In fact, Sarah Burton’s design for Kate tops the list for most successful celebrity wedding dress of all time. Sarah Burton is also the most successful designer, having also created Serena Williams’ main wedding dress, bringing Burton’s full search volume to over 90,000 searches globally every month.

Alexander McQueen’s other most famous dress went to Princess Diana. The dramatic long train and classic puffed sleeves that perfectly encapsulates the 1980s saw an upsurge in interest last year when series 4 of The Crown was released (most likely because it only made a 14-second appearance). It is still considered one of the best wedding dresses of all time, permanently embedded into the memories of millions around the world.

2. Givenchy

Similar to Alexander McQueen, Givenchy has made it high on the list thanks to its television exposure. Both Meghan Markle and Kim Kardashian featured the designer in their blockbuster weddings, accounting for 65,000 searches around the world every month.

Givenchy, however, has a shorter marriage track record with both celebrities only having married in the past decade, but both dresses were infinitely blessed with romance and elegance.

3. John Galliano

John Galliano’s collaborative design with the 90s favourite fashion muse, Kate Moss, delivered all his signature touches: decadence and playfulness. In fact, it was a blissful union for the two as Galliano remarked to Vogue “She dared me to be John Galliano again… I couldn’t pick up a pencil. It’s been my creative rehab.” And boy, was the dress a triumph–it even got a standing ovation at the wedding. Only John Galliano could upstage the bride on her wedding day. Even 10 years on, it gets 13,000 monthly searches around the globe, ensuring that Galliano lives on forever.

4. Christian Dior

Weddings featuring Dior include the likes of a former US president and one of the world’s biggest influencers–not too shabby for the French fashion house. Both Melania Trump and Angela Yeung (a.k.a. Angelababy) donned wedding gowns from the fashion designer with Angela’s taking over 5 months to make! Altogether both dresses earn over 7,000 searches each month.

Overall, Dior has an 11 year marriage average, making it the second longest marriage average of all designers in the study.

5. Lawrence Steele

Closing out the top 5 is Lawrence Steele, who while not as big a household name, is tied to one of the most famous relationships in the past 25 years: Brad and Jen. The F.R.I.E.N.D.S. actress was at the peak of her career, marrying one of the most desirable men around the world (we like to think that she made him the Sexiest Man Alive for the second time in 2000). It was one of the most talked about weddings helping Lawrence Steele continue to be one of the most talked about celebrity wedding dress designers according to our study, with over 3,000 users searching for the iconic dress every month.

Honourable mention: Vera Wang & Christian Lacroix

Despite her name being synonymous with wedding dresses and having dressed the most celebrity brides in our study, Vera Wang did not crack the top 5. The wedding dress designer may account for 43 years of marriage across some of the most lavish celebrity weddings, but only two couples continue together: Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner and Chelsea Clinton and Mark Mezvinsky. Both couples have managed to make it past the  10 year mark, with Chelsea receiving the best return on investment. Her dress has cost her £1,327.27 for every year of marriage compared to Ivanka who is currently at £3,041 for every year of marriage. However, the greatest winner is Khloe Kardashian whose dress cost “just” £497.71 for every year of her 7-year marriage to NBA star Lamar Odom.

For a long-lasting marriage, Christian Lacroix is your best bet with an average of 13.5 years. In fact, the longest marriage is Catherine Zeta-Jones and Michael Douglas who have been together for 21 years. Maybe the Christian Lacroix is the secret to longevity?

Love can cost a thing

Whilst money doesn’t buy happiness, some celebrity nuptials could convince us otherwise.  As mentioned before, actors Catherine Zeta-Jones and Michael Douglas have the longest marriage on the list, having been married for 21 years. Their £1.1 million wedding has cost them just over £52,000 for every year of marriage. Former James Bond Actor Pierce Brosnan and wife, Keely Shaye Smith are just behind with their 20 year marriage costing almost £55,000 a year.

Outside of the royals, the most luxurious nuptials belonged to Chinese model and actress Angela Yeung (most commonly known as “Angelababy”). Her wedding to fellow Chinese actor, Huang Xiaming, cost a whopping £22.6 million ($31 million). Angelababy and Huang Xiaming would have to be married for 434 years if they were to get the same ROI as Catherine Zeta-Jones! Nevertheless, their wedding day has not been as costly as Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries whose £7.2 million wedding cost almost £100,000 per day of their marriage. In comparison, Angelababy’s has only cost £10,000 per day–only!

There’s obviously no guarantee that a certain dress will make a marriage last, but wedding photos do last a lifetime, so you’ll want to look fab on your special day.
