The Best Places to Elope Around the World

Planning for a wedding can be stressful. From finding the right dresses for yourself, bridesmaids, mum, and flower girl, to picking the venue, decorating, and arranging guests to avoid any additional drama, it can be exhausting. But getting married doesn’t have to be all of those things.

Whether because of so many postponements and disruptions or simply to make their own traditions, more couples are turning to elopements whether at home or abroad to keep things cool and intimate. In fact, searches for elopements have gone up by 16% in the past year worldwide and 4% in the UK alone.

At LM, we’ve looked at the most popular elopement destinations according to search volume and ranked them based on Instagrammability and number of honeymoon activities according to TripAdvisor–because why not have a destination wedding and picture-perfect honeymoon all in one place?

Il dolce matrimonio in Italy – 41 points

Celebrate the sweetest nuptials in Italy. The country known for good food and good wine makes the perfect getaway for couples that are looking to tie the knot in secret. Italy was the second most popular elopement destination according to search volume with 260 searches a month and over 28,000 elopement-tagged Instagram posts. But it’s the country’s vast number of romantic honeymoon spots that make this a great option for eloping couples, giving it the ultimate score of 41 points.

But before you partake in la dolce vita, make sure you get all the documents in order. The UK government website has a handy getting married abroad tool to make sure you get all the bureaucracy right like the Nulla Osta form ahead of your trip. And if you’re looking for the perfect dress to tie into the romance and history of Italy, check out this cream square neck dress, structured to highlight your curves.

Marrying a bit closer to home in Scotland – 35 points

Scotland was the most searched for elopement destination with almost 900 searches every month. Since Gretna Green became a young couple’s marriage haven in 1754, it’s no wonder many couples look to Scotland to run away and get hitched. Its dramatic and wild landscapes and charming cities make for great wedding photos, even without a large bridal party or groomsmen.

To really capture this wild beauty, go for more earth tones when it comes to your bouquet as well as warmer makeup to really pop in your official wedding photos. We love this high neck dress matched with an autumn-themed floral crown or a faux fur cropped jacket — which you could probably get away with wearing no matter what time of year you get married in Scotland!

“Aloha” to “I do” – 34 points

There’s a reason why Hawaii tops most people’s lists of dream honeymoon destinations. In fact, it came in second only to Paris for most romantic honeymoon activities. Get hitched along the water or take photos in its lush green landscape dotted by volcanoes. Then cheers the night away with your new spouse with a Blue Hawaii!

Getting hitched in this tropical paradise is a great spot for the more bohemian bride — and the spontaneous one as well. To get married in Hawaii, couples need to get a marriage licence, have a valid passport, and have their birth certificates, but can get married the same day as they get their licence. Then you can enjoy the rest of your trip with a honeymoon you’ll never forget.

Shotgun wedding in Vegas – 31 points

What happens in Vegas, does not stay in Vegas this time. For the eclectic and fun-loving couple, a wedding in Las Vegas can make for an incredible memory with fun photos to commemorate forever. Add some more glitter and glam with this hand-embellished ivory wedding dress, in a lightweight material perfect for the hot desert.

Similar to Hawaii, getting married in Vegas is relatively easy as long as you have proof of name and age through a passport and you can get married the same day as receiving your marriage licence which costs around £61 ($79.79)–which means you should have plenty of money and time to hit the slots later.

A little Irish luck to bless your wedding – 31 points

Ireland tied with Vegas for its place in the top 5 destinations for eloping couples thanks to its more romantic list of honeymoon activities. Go for a more romantic and ethereal look for your wedding dress, like this embellished bridal gown with sheer long sleeves that complements the lushness of Irish countryside. Also look for more jewel-toned accessories — and even ask your chosen witnesses to partake in the colour scheme!

Irish elopements, however, will require some more planning than some of the other destinations featured on this list. Couples are required to give 3 months notice to the Registrar prior to getting married preferably in person, but there is opportunity to do it by post. If done by post, then you are required to meet with the registrar 5 days prior to getting married to sign the declaration form and receive your Marriage Registration Form (MRF). Even with a little more paperwork, it’s well worth it for a little Irish luck – Sláinte!
