The Ultimate Platinum Jubilee Garden Party Style Guide

This June, Her Majesty the Queen is celebrating her Platinum Jubilee – marking 70 years on the throne. There will be plenty of celebrations going on, but a summertime date and a four-day weekend? Sounds like the perfect excuse for a garden party to us…

With the help of some party-throwing experts, we’ve put together a guide for throwing the most stylish garden party on your street. Read on for tips on hosting, decorating and what to wear to a jubilee party…

What to wear to a garden party

First thing’s first – your garden party wardrobe is obviously the most important thing we need to consider. Whether you’re the hostess with the mostest or are an honoured guest, picking the right party outfit for outdoors is crucial.

When it comes to the Great British summer it’s obviously a little tricky to predict the weather, but we’re optimistic that the sun will come out for the Jubilee weekend! Garden party fashion is all about cute silhouettes and comfort, and we’d probably advise avoiding too much white or cream (grass stains!).

Jubilee-themed dresses

Our Little Mistress x Vogue Williams Edit has lots of colourful dresses perfect for summer parties and barbecues. Since it’s the Jubilee, we’ve picked out some colourful options in red, white and blue that offer the perfect combination of style and comfort for your garden party.

Floral frocks

Lots of the best garden party dresses have floral prints, to really embrace the great outdoors theme. A floral dress is a great way to add lots of colour and interest to an outfit, and can also be very forgiving of the odd mark or stain – great for outdoor events!

Green is a good option for an outdoor party dress – you’re sure to match at least part of the decor! For summer events you also can’t go wrong with a lovely multicolour print in lots of bright hues, like the wrap dress below.

Garden party-friendly shoes

We all know that shoes can make or break an outfit, but when it comes to outdoor events you need to think at least a little practically. Matching with your outfit is key, of course, but you also need to think about the venue. Will you be walking on grass? Are there cobblestones or gravel walkways?

We love wedge heels for summer garden parties, which give you a bit of height without taking away too much stability. Wedges are the quintessential summer shoe, and our range contains a selection of colours for matching with your dress.

For a timeless classic we love a nude or earthy toned wedge heel for garden party looks – they go with so many outfits and you’ll be wearing these all summer long.

Garden Party hosting tips

For Jubilee parties, it’s a really good idea to go all out on the decor. Garden parties or street parties are a great excuse to get up the bunting, fairy lights and garden decorations to really set the scene.

Light fantastic

The home experts at Hillarys know a thing or two about the importance of the right lighting. They recommend purchasing an awning, whether for controlling the amount of natural light around your party space, or sheltering patios from the rain.

They also recommend using LED lighting to brighten up your outdoor space and get it party ready. You can choose from multi-coloured, white or colour changing lights depending on the theme of your party – perhaps red, white and blue lights to celebrate the Queen’s Jubilee! To save the lights from the rainy British weather, it’s best to purchase waterproof LEDs to be safe. Our top tip is to line the top of your patio doors with strip lighting to give your outdoor environment a bit of style and sophistication.

Bring the bar to you

It’s just as – if not more – important to think about drink storage for garden parties. There’s nothing worse than a warm cocktail! For smaller gatherings and backyard barbecues you may be able to make do with a portable drinks cooler or a big bucket full of ice to keep your drinks chilled.

If you did fancy being a bit extra, however, you could always go the extra mile and build your own garden bar! Any excuse to keep the drinks flowing year-round…

Garden party chic

Get the vibes right at your party and it will be a celebration for the ages. Go for bunting, flags and colourful decor like napkins and table runners for a festive day-time atmosphere, and turn to LED lanterns or candles in the evening.

Make sure you’ve got a good playlist going – and make sure there’s enough in your Spotify queue to last all party long. Portable speakers or a radio with a Bluetooth connection will be key.
