What to Wear to a Winter Wedding

A thoughtful wedding-guest outfit starts with the dress code, a beautiful layer and shoes that work for the whole day.

Winter wedding dressing is about the whole day: travelling to the venue, the ceremony, photographs and an evening on the dance floor. Build an outfit that works across those moments, with a considered layer and a comfortable fit.

Read the invitation first

Black tie, a city ceremony and a relaxed country wedding call for different levels of formality. Check the dress code and whether you will spend time outdoors. If you are unsure about a colour or level of sparkle, ask the hosts.

A maxi dress with a simple finish

Tallulah’s green satin maxi dress is a starting point for a dressed-up look. Try a small black or metallic bag and simple earrings, letting the lace detail do the work. Wear it with shoes you have already tried with the hem.

A jumpsuit is an elegant alternative

Raine’s black jumpsuit combines a square neckline, wide legs and contrast shoulder bows. Keep jewellery simple around the bows and choose a compact bag. Check that your outer layer fits comfortably over the shoulder detail.

Plan the layer as part of the outfit

Eleni’s faux fur jacket gives an evening outfit a soft finishing touch. For longer periods outside, choose outerwear suitable for the weather rather than relying on an occasion jacket alone. Try everything together: sleeves should move freely, and your layer should close comfortably if you need it to.

Choose practical finishing touches

Consider the venue when choosing shoes. A stable heel or smart flat may suit steps, gravel or a long day better than a narrow heel. Pack only what you need in your evening bag so the strap and fastening remain comfortable.

Try the outfit on before the day

Use the bra or base layer and shoes you plan to wear. Sit, walk and raise your arms; check the neckline and fastenings in a mirror. With a jumpsuit, make sure the torso length allows you to sit comfortably as well as stand.
